concours
CommerceDesignLuxembourg 2010

Design to play a key role in Europe’s innovation policy

”Design is rapidly becoming an integral part of European innovation thinking,” claimed Jan R. Stavik, president of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Assiciations), which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with more than 40 member organisations in 23 countries.

Over the past few years, BEDA has worked hard to persuade the European Commission (EC) to include design on the innovation agenda. In 2008 BEDA had a very constructive and promising meeting with the President of the European Commission, Mr. José Manuel Barroso, which led to another important meeting; this time with the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr. Günter Verheugen.

Design as a tool for innovation
The result so far has been an extensive and unique Staff Working Document from EU’s Enterprise Directorate, which was published early this summer for open consultation. The document clearly identifies design as an important tool for innovation. The open consultation generated an impressive number of responses from all over Europe, and even outside Europe.
For instance, the European Commission document reports that “the results are compelling: companies that invest in design tend to be more innovative, more profitable and grow faster than those that do not. At macro-economic level, there is a strong positive correlation between the use of design and national competitiveness.”

oosting European competitiveness
“The European Commission sees design as crucial in bridging the gap between creativity and innovation today. We have achieved a genuine breakthrough for design in Europe, which can boost European competitiveness in the future,” added Mr. Stavik.

The BEDA president stressed that many countries in Europe have been hard hit by the credit crunch, at a time when competition from other parts of the world has continued to intensify. “Design has an important role to play in making European industry and enterprise more viable,” said Stavik.
He feels many European companies and organisations still have some way to go before they can leverage the commercial and development potential offered by design. At a political level, the amount of design know-how differs hugely in the various European countries.

“Design makes innovation more user-centred and this helps companies develop better and more competitive products and services. Tough times, pressure on prices and greater competition from other parts of the world, mean Europe needs all the advantages it can get in the battle to stay ahead. Which is where design can play a crucial part as a vital tool for innovation,” Mr. Stavik stressed.

DME Award 2009

Companies and organisations across Europe are challenged to apply for the DME Award by demonstrating how design is integrated in their strategy, management and processes to achieve commercial gains. The DME Award has six categories: Large, Medium, Small and Micro businesses, Non Profit/Government organisations and First Time Design project.

Recognition of excellent quality and successful design management

The DME Award aims at becoming a sustainable competition awarding exemplary companies and organisations every year. The number of applicants and the overall quality of entries illustrates the success of the 2007 and 2008 edition of this new and exciting award and demonstrates that numerous companies have already recognized the positive impact that the use of design can have in their business performances.

Recognition by the Award Jury demonstrates leadership in innovation, implementing change and excellence in management. Winners will receive official recognition of their excellent quality and successful design management before a distinguished international audience and will participate in a (travelling) exhibition introducing their use of Design Management to both the public and the media. In this respect the DME Award is also an excellent marketing instrument to communicate quality and competitiveness not only to customers and clients but also internally to staff, increasing morale and productivity.

Design backstage | 13.03. - 14.04.2009

Design is much more than just making things look nice. Design is a tool for competitiveness and a tool for better life. It ads value and emotions to products, services, communication and brands. It is increasingly being used beyond this traditional remit as a strategic tool which enhances performance and unlocks innovation.

Design results from creativity, inspiration, skill, experience, intuition and discipline. In the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, Design Luxembourg has set up an exhibition that disseminates not only the relationship between design and innovation, but also demonstrates the process of design, the role of the designer in Luxembourg and the value of design to business, culture and society at large.

The “Design Backstage” exhibition includes 21 design firms working in all areas of design. Together, they demonstrate the value of design in Luxembourg.

13th March - 14th April 2009 | Carré Rotondes, 1 rue de l’Aciérie, Luxembourg-Hollerich. Free entry.

Orange Blue | 01.2008

There are approximately 900 designers in Luxembourg, about two-thirds of whom are active in the field of graphic design. In 2006, they earned a total of 36 million Euros. Compared with the Netherlands, where 46,000 designers earned a total of 2.6 billion Euros in 2005, this is, of course a small amount – but from a Luxembourg perspective it is a good beginning. Furthermore, the figures from the Netherlands clearly illustrate the financial significance that design can have for a country’s economy.

The “Orange Blue” exhibition Luxembourg at the “Fondation de l’architecture”) includes 17 design firms working in the areas of graphic, product, photo and fashion design. Together, they make up a representative sample of Design Luxembourg’s registered membership.

As part of the “Orange Blue” project, a Workshop Day will also be held on 23 January 2008 at the MUDAM (Musée d'Art Moderne) Luxembourg. Here, interested participants will have the opportunity to work together on the subjects of “Milk Packaging”, “Origami” and “Useless Items”.

In addition, readings on the themes of “Design Management > Design Management Netwerk” (17 January 2008)“Design Education > Design Academy Eindhoven” (23 January 2008) and “Design & Culture >Dr. Marjan Groot > University of Leiden (NL)” (30 January 2008) will be presented in the auditorium of the Dexia Bank in Esch-Belval/Luxembourg.

Meanwhile, thanks to the close alliance created by Benelux and the European Union – of which both countries are founding members – their cooperation functions on many levels: political, economic and cultural. Considering all this, it is not surprising that Design Luxembourg’s first exhibition is the product of a cooperative effort – or rather, an exchange – with the Netherlands. The “Orange Blue” project could only be realised thanks to the financial support of the Dutch Embassy. The project will reach international audiences through its exhibition at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven from 20 until 28 October 2007, among other venues.

Graphic Design Made Difficult | 17.10.2009

The lecture is a general talk about graphic design, bob gill's work, explanations, his way of thinking and hopfully a lot of questions at the end.

Bob Gill is a designer, an illustrator, a copywriter, a film-maker and a teacher. After freelancing in NewYork, he went to London on a whim in 1960 and stayed 15 years. He started letcher/Forbes/Gill, a design office in with the two brightest designers in England. F/F/G began with two assistants and a secretary. Today, it's called Pentagram, with offices everywhere. Gill resigned in 1967 to work independently in London. He returned to New York in 1975 to write and design Beatlemania, the largest multimedia musical up to that time on Broadway, with Robert Rabinowitz, the painter. Gill still works independently and still teaches. He's had one-man shows in Europe, South America, the Far East and in the US. He was elected to the New York Art Directors Cub Hall of Fame and the Designers and Art Directors Association of London recently presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

European Commission to act on design policy for Europe

On Monday 21 January 2008, BEDA President Michael Thomson (UK) and Vice-President, Jan R Stavik (Norway) met with Vice-President of the Commission, Günter Verheugen at his office in the European Commission in Brussels.

At the meeting, Günter Verheugen stressed the European Commission’s full agreement with the positioning of design as a “very crucial element” for European competitiveness. “Europe must maintain its position as the most competitive region in the world as far as design is concerned”, said Vice-President Verheugen.

Three key actions were agreed.

1/ The European Commission will issue a Communication on design 1 to be published during the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2 in 2009. This policy document will include guidance to EU Member States on national design promotion strategies in addition to other measures to support the growth of Europe’s design industries and to stimulate the wider adoption of design by Europe’s 23 million Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

2/ The Commission will reinforce its efforts to build up a knowledge base for design activity and design policy in Europe. The European project ADMIRE 3, supported by the Commission under PRO INNO Europe, is currently conducting a mapping study of design and design management in Europe. This information will be complemented by data from existing tools such as the INNO-Policy Trendchart, the Innobarometer and the European Innovation Scoreboard, which will give design a more prominent place from 2008 onwards.

3/ The Commission will ensure the existence of a permanent body for a dialogue on design policy as a key component of Europe’s innovation policy, within the context of achieving the goals of the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs.

BEDA President Michael Thomson said, “The measures outlined by Vice-President Verheugen today will permanently raise design’s profile in European innovation policy and will help to grow and strengthen design in Europe”.

BEDA Vice-President Jan Stavik said, “We welcome the foresight and initiative of the EU Vice-President Verheugen and BEDA looks forward to working closely with the Directorate General for Enterprise.”

1. This Communication would be a non-legislative policy document to the other European institutions, notably the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

2. The Commission has proposed to make 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

The ADMIRE project was launched in January 2007. ADMIRE aims to encourage companies - especially SMEs - to introduce design management procedures in order to improve their competitiveness. To this end, the ADMIRE project intends to stimulate innovation, establish a European knowledge-sharing platform, organise a European Design Management Award and to identify and test new activities to promote design management.
