The 17th edition of the Joseph Binder Award, organized by designaustria, has kicked off, and submissions are now open. With the theme “Under Pressure” it takes a light-hearted look at the shared reality of designers and illustrators – navigating change, expectations and new challenges constantly.

Pressure can be exhausting but it can also spark new ideas. The Joseph Binder Award celebrates the work that has emerged from the past two years: bold ideas, fresh perspectives and outstanding design and illustration.

Submissions

Graphic designers, illustrators, advertising agencies and students from around the world are invited to submit work created in 2025 or later.

An Early Bird discount of 10% is available on submission fees until September 25, 2026. The final submission deadline is October 31, 2026.

About the Joseph Binder Award

The Joseph Binder Award is an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration and was first launched in 1996 by designaustria, knowledge centre and advocacy for design in Austria. It is named after one of Austria’s most prestigious graphic designers, who also revolutionized visual communication in the United States.

What’s new?

The new “Honored Selection” puts the spotlight on selected designers and illustrators as early as the exhibition opening and Press Day—even before the final ranking is announced; their work is also featured in the renowned JBA catalog and in a traveling exhibition.

And all of this is part of the Joseph Binder Days: two full days (April 28–29, 2027) at the MuseumsQuartier Wien, featuring the exhibition opening, a symposium (free for all award-winning designers and illustrators), the awards ceremony, and an after-show get-together at the designforum Wien.
